Heart health after 50: the risk factors that actually move the needle

Couple in their 50s walking on a coastal path

Cardiovascular disease covers conditions of the heart and blood vessels — including heart attack and stroke. Age raises risk for everyone, but lifestyle and measurable markers still strongly influence the path you are on.

Risk factors you can influence

  • Blood pressure that sits consistently high
  • Unfavourable cholesterol and triglyceride patterns
  • Smoking
  • Physical inactivity
  • Excess abdominal weight
  • Poorly managed blood glucose

Why they cluster

Risk factors rarely travel alone. Inactivity, diet quality, weight, and stress often reinforce each other. That is why “one change at a time” still helps — improving sleep or walking daily can nudge several markers in a better direction.

What to do this month

Know your numbers (blood pressure, lipids, glucose). Move most days. Prioritise vegetables, fibre, and lean protein while trimming ultra-processed defaults. If you smoke, quitting is still the highest-impact step available. Work with your GP on targets that fit your history — especially if you already take heart medication.
