Your heart beats roughly 100,000 times a day. Every single contraction is powered by a molecule called Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). After the age of 40, your body naturally begins producing less of it. By age 60, many adults have lost up to 40% of their CoQ10 capacity, often without realising it.

This is not a minor change. The heart contains the highest concentration of mitochondria of any organ because it works continuously throughout your life. What CoQ10 Actually Does

CoQ10, also known as ubiquinone, or in its active reduced form, ubiquinol, is a fat-soluble compound found in the inner membrane of every mitochondrion in the body. Its primary role is within the electron transport chain, the process that converts nutrients into ATP, the body's main source of cellular energy.

Without enough CoQ10, this energy production process becomes less efficient. Cells generate less ATP, free radicals accumulate, oxidative stress increases, and heart muscle cells—which rely heavily on mitochondrial energy—can be particularly affected.

The Statin Connection

There is an important and often overlooked relationship between CoQ10 and statin medications. Statins reduce cholesterol production by blocking an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. However, this same biochemical pathway is also responsible for producing CoQ10.

As a result, statin use can reduce circulating CoQ10 levels by approximately 40–50%, further lowering the body's natural supply.

The Evidence for Supplementation

A 2014 randomised controlled trial published in JACC: Heart Failure, known as the Q-SYMBIO study, found that taking 300 mg of CoQ10 daily significantly reduced major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with heart failure compared with a placebo over a two-year period.

It was the first large randomised controlled trial to demonstrate a mortality benefit from a nutritional supplement in this patient population. More broadly, multiple meta-analyses have also supported the potential role of CoQ10 supplementation in improving cardiovascular health and reducing markers of heart disease.
